✈️ 3 Main Ways to Travel to Lofoten

1️⃣✈️ Evenes Airport (EVE):

📍 Location:EVE is on the northeastern side of Lofoten, close to Narvik / Harstad.

  • It is one of the most popular airports for travelers entering Lofoten.
  • There are direct flights from Oslo (OSL).
  • It is relatively far from major towns, so you must plan carefully around airport shuttle schedules.

旅遊路線建議:由北到南 Evenes → Svolvær → Leknes → Reine

2️⃣ Regional Airports ✈️ Leknes (LKN) / Svolvær (SVJ): For travelers with high budgets and tight schedules.

📍 Location: Leknes (LKN) is in central Lofoten; Svolvær (SVJ)is in northern Lofoten.

  • Flights are operated primarily by the regional airline Widerøe.
  • Most flights fly in from Bodø or Tromsø, dropping you right in the core areas of the islands upon landing.
  • Airfares are typically more expensive, and baggage limits are stricter on these smaller aircraft.

3️⃣ Bodø Ferry Terminal (Bodø ferjekai): Free for foot passengers 🚢; this is the option we chose.

📍 Location:Bodø ferjekai Bodø is the gateway to Northern Norway and features highly diverse transit options機場、火車站及港口

  • Bodø port📍Bodø ferjekai to Moskenes Ferry Port in Lofoten.Moskenes Ferryport
  • Moskenes Port is at the southern tip of Lofoten, near Reine. Crossing as a foot passenger is completely free!
  • Bodø has an airport (OSL -> BOO) as well as a train station; many travelers opt to use the overnight sleeper train to get there (Trondheim -> Bodø).

Suggested travel route: From south to north (Bodø → Reine → Leknes → Svolvær).

The Bodø–Moskenes ferry is entirely free for foot passengers (vehicles are charged), making it perfect for carless travelers!
Foot passengers must scan a QR code to register their personal details before boarding.
The ferries are massive with plenty of seating, but as a precaution, it is recommended to arrive more than half an hour early ⏰.

⚠️⚠️ Make absolutely certain to check the connection times for the REIS bus corresponding to your ferry's arrival time before setting off ! We had to wait an hour for the bus after arriving at Moskenes Port.

Missed your bus? Here are the "alternative solutions" when there is truly no bus available:

  • 🚕Taxifix App :The local taxi-hailing app; make sure to download it just in case of emergencies.
  • 👍HitchhikingBravely stick your thumb out. Many people note that the success rate of flagging down rides along the E10 highway is high.
  • 🚶Your almighty feet: Lofoten is scenic at every turn. While this is a last-resort measure, it was also what we ended up doing most frequently.

⚠️ The Easiest Bus Pitfalls to Fall Into for Non-Drivers in Lofoten

The primary concern is not the distance, but rather: "Bus frequencies are too low; your itinerary must be tailored around transit schedules."

1. Only checking the outbound trip and ignoring the return:
Always confirm before setting off: outbound times / return times / the last bus of the day.

📝 2. Packing your schedule too tight:
Since bus runs are limited, hopping across multiple attractions in a single day is exceptionally difficult. Settle for 1–2 main spots per day instead; Lofoten deserves to be experienced slowly.

👋 . A must-do when waiting for the bus:Flag it down vigorously the moment you spot it from afar!
Many local stops are merely a solitary pole on the side of the road—no rain shelters and no electronic displays, so dress warmly.
Because there are few passengers, you must flag the bus down as soon as you see it approaching! Otherwise, the driver might assume you're just admiring the scenery and drive right past.

📢 4. A must-do when getting off: Sit near the front, ring the bell early, and speak up immediately if missed!
Be sure to press the stop button well before reaching your stop;sitting in the front rows near the driver is highly recommended.
If you notice the driver isn't slowing down and seems poised to overshoot your stop, don't be shy—speak up right away to remind them!
⚠️ A painful lesson learned We assumed the bus would automatically stop once the bell was rung, but the driver was focused too hard on driving and forgot to pull over.
We missed our stop twice because of this, resulting in us silently walking a massive distance back in the freezing wind. Definitely don't copy us 😿.

🧳 🧳 5. Stowing large luggage in the undercarriage compartment:
The interiors of the buses do not feature large luggage racks
Before boarding, if the driver spots large bags, they will signal you to place them in the storage compartment under the bus chassis. You only need to bring your handheld valuables on board.

📱 Your phone is your lifeline
Schedules, live bus tracking, and ticket purchases rely heavily on your phone, so keep a close eye on your battery percentage.

💰  7. Purchasing tickets from the driver incurs a surcharge:
imply use the app to buy tickets and present them to the driver upon boarding. Buying tickets on the spot in cash or card from the driver costs an extra 20 NOK (~60 TWD).

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Lofoten Transportation FAQ

Q1: Do I need to buy a 7-day Pass for Lofoten buses?

In the Lofoten Islands, all public bus transportation is operated by the company REIS (Reis Nordland). Therefore, you must download the REIS app to purchase tickets! Buying on board from the driver is more expensive—it requires a surcharge of 20 NOK (approximately 60 TWD)!

In addition to single tickets, an unlimited-ride 7-day travel pass is also available for selection.

Why didn't we buy the 7-day pass (Travel Pass Nordland) despite staying long enough?
Because bus frequencies are very, very, very low! The timetables are fundamentally not designed with tourists in mind.

Furthermore, by 2026, the price has surged to 1,990 NOK (~6,400 TWD), making it incredibly difficult to break even on a 7-day pass. 😭

Who is it suitable for? 🍽️ Those who value convenience over cost and don't mind the price.

😺 I suggest using the Reis app to calculate the cumulative total of individual single fares before you depart; once you do the math yourself, you'll see why 😆.

Q2: Is winter suitable for exploring Lofoten without a car? ❄️

Winter is also a highly popular season due to the northern lights and dreamlike snowscapes. However, daylight is exceptionally short at this time (even hitting polar night), and bus frequencies drop, making it vastly more challenging for non-driving travelers. Waiting for a bus by the roadside in winter inside the Arctic Circle is quite an ordeal in my opinion.

👉 Recommended Strategies:

  • Set up fixed accommodations (Reine / Svolvær)
  • Avoid schedules with frequent transit or high mobility
  • Join local northern lights tours 🌌 or attraction day trips to collect classic snowy fishing village photos
